More than 3,000 people missing in North Korea following the floods, according to a humanitarian organization

- South Korean Press distensions have emerged in relations between North Korea and China. The North has ignored the call from Beijing against its missile tests. Its leader Kim Jong-il has refused to meet with Chinese diplomats who traveled to Pyongyang to discuss the missile crisis and persuade him to return to the international negotiating table. It was later learned that the Beijing government had authorized the departure of three North Korean refugees seeking asylum in the United States. This is the first time that China allows North Koreans to seek asylum in the United States and allows them to go directly without going through a third country. This visible change in relations between the two countries is also highlighted by the decision of the Bank of China to freeze North Korean assets of its branch in Macao.
